Licences and IDP basics
Syrian citizens can typically use a valid Syrian licence when renting domestically. If you only hold a foreign licence, carry the original plus an International Driving Permit when your issuing country requires it.
Photocopies are not substitutes at handover — vendors need to see originals and may photograph them for their file.
Road culture refresher
Syria drives on the **right**. Roundabouts, merge lanes, and pedestrian crossings deserve extra patience — speeds may feel faster or slower than what you are used to abroad.
Use indicators generously, keep a safe following distance, and expect motorcycles to filter through traffic.
Checkpoints and paperwork
Keep rental agreement, ID, and licence within easy reach (glove box pouch, not the boot). Stay calm, answer questions politely, and know the emergency numbers stored in your phone.
If you are unsure about a detour, pull over safely and confirm directions with your vendor or a local contact.
Night driving and weather
Coastal fog in winter and dusty conditions in summer both reduce visibility. Use low beams in fog, reduce speed, and avoid overtaking on blind curves.
If you have jet lag after a long flight, sleep before a night highway run — rental cars are only safe when the driver is alert.
